Doug Hoo
Doug Hoo is a high school senior track star. He has black hair, long legs, and runs fast. Doug's partner in the Westing Games is Theo Theodorakis. The two high schoolers receive the clues: HIS N ON TO THEE FOR and Theo thinks that they spell the numbers: one, two, three, and four. Doug thinks that the clue ON is actually NO. He lists his position as: " first in all-state high-school mile run". Doug's father wants Doug to study more than running but all Doug thinks and cares about is running. He's always jogging or exercising. Everyone has high hopes for Doug, and it pays off because in the end of book, Doug has won two Olympic gold medals.
James Shin Hoo
James Shin Hoo is the father of Doug Hoo. He's 50 years old and is married to Madame Sun Lin Hoo for her cooking. James Hoo's first wife died of cancer so he remarried to Sun Lin Hoo. He has a restaurant called: Shin Hoo's Restaurant. Mr. Hoo (as he's often called) added Shin to his name because he thought he didn't sound Chinese enough. James Hoo is very competitive with the coffee shop run by the Theodorakis's. In the Westing Games, Mr. Hoo listed his position as: "restaurateur". He's partnered up with Grace Wexler and their clues are: FRUITED PURPLE WAVES FOR SEA. Grace thinks that the murderer lives in apartment 4C but Mr. Hoo lives there. James is always telling his son to study. He thinks that Doug cares too much about running. At first, most people think that he's the murderer because he sued Sam Westing for stealing his idea of disposable paper diapers but later they find out that he's kind hearted and makes lots of money from his paper insoles.
Madame Sun Lin Hoo
Madame Sun Lin Hoo or Mrs. Hoo is the wife of James Hoo. She's a small delicate woman and wears a white apron when she cooks. Mrs. Hoo is only 28 years old and she doesn't speak much English. She's beautiful and young causing Grace Wexler to get jealous when Mrs. Hoo and Jake Wexler are together. Madame Hoo's partner is Jake Wexler and they receive the clues: OF AMERICA AND GOD ABOVE. Jake doesn't know what the clues mean and Madame Hoo doesn't speak much English so they didn't come to an answer. She listed her position in the Westing Games as: "cook" for both times the heirs visited the Westing House. Mrs. Hoo always says, "Boom!"- a word she learned from Otis Amber. She's the thief who stole Flora's pearls, JJ Ford's watch, Grace's pin and earrings set and cuff links, and Turtle's Mickey Mouse clock to sell so she could go to China.
